What causes caffeine addiction?
_Caffeine is bad for the health because regular
consumption of caffeinated drinks can turn into an addiction. When a
person drinks a caffeinated drink, dopamine is released. Dopamine
affects the region of the brain that controls the ability to feel
pleasure and pain (The University of Texas, 2011). It is released when a
person performs a pleasurable activity and motivates the person to do
the activity again in the future. The increase of dopamine gives the
feeling of pleasure when a person drinks caffeine (Griffin, 2008). The
“feel-good” effect of caffeine causes drinkers to crave for more.
Therefore, caffeine should be avoided because its effect on dopamine can
lead to caffeine addiction, making a person more vulnerable to its
harmful effects.
