Too much hurts
_One health risk of drinking an energy drink is that it contains large amounts of caffeine (Tanner, 2011). Caffeine is safe in moderate amounts but teens should limit their consumption to 100 milligrams of caffeine daily (Nemours, 2008). Energy drinks contain up to 80 milligrams of caffeine and other stimulants, compared to a can of soda which only contains 25 to 40 milligrams of caffeine (Waterman, 2007). An energy drink a day is safe but two or more can lead to irregular rhythm and beating of the heart called heart palpitations (Cunha, 2008). This increases the risk of heart problems to teenagers. The effects of caffeine are intensified by other ingredients such as ginseng and guarana (International Business Times, 2011). Teens should try to limit or avoid drinking energy drinks because they are dangerous to the heart.
