Caffeine

_Caffeine is found in many of our drinks like tea and soft drinks and in foods like chocolate. It is a chemical that is naturally produced by the leaves and seeds of many plants such as tea leaves and coffee beans (Nemours, 2008). Caffeine is classified as a drug because it stimulates the central nervous system (MedlinePlus, 2011). Caffeine does not stay in the body and leaves in the urine after many hours. The body does not need caffeine and can be avoided. In its natural form, caffeine tastes bitter but manufacturers found a way to mask this taste to a delicious drink that teenagers love. Just like other drugs, caffeine is addictive, leaving teens craving for more. Even though it is a drug, it is considered safe in moderate amounts and has positive effects on the body.
