Fatigue
_Another reason that caffeine is bad to teenagers is that it could cause them to feel more tired. When people drink caffeine, they feel a sudden rush of energy. This is because adrenaline, the “fight or flight” hormone, is activated (Hill, 2010). Adrenaline is released by the adrenal glands as a response to a stressful situation to give extra energy to fight or flee for survival. Adrenaline stimulates the heart, dilates blood vessels and expands air passages to allow more blood and oxygen flow throughout the body (Rosen, 2010). Adrenaline is what gives athletes a burst of energy to win the race and mothers to lift a car. Drinking caffeine puts the body into a “fight or flight” stage, which is useless to teens who are just sitting and studying on a desk. Eventually, the adrenaline rush will wear off leaving the person feeling tired and depressed. Teens usually grab another caffeinated drink to counteract the feeling of fatigue, constantly putting their bodies into a stressful mode. Caffeine forces the adrenal glands to release adrenaline even though they don’t have much to give, leading to adrenal burnout (Veracity, 2005). Therefore, caffeine should not be a source of energy for teenagers because it leads to fatigue and result to adrenal burnout over time.
